이전 시간에는 위와 같은 such 용법들을 다뤄봤습니다. 그럼 이번 시간엔 such용법과 비슷하게 쓰이는 so 용법들에 대해서 알아봅시다.

So+형용사/부사

• So+형/부: 대단히, 매우, 너무나 
  -형용사 수식:so good, so loud, so quick, so old
  -부사 수식: so well, so loudly, so quickly, so early
  
  ex) My father's car is so old.
     =The weather is so warm.
  
  
• So+형/부 that S+V:너무 ~해서 ~하다.
  =Such+a [an]+형 +명 that ~
  ex) He spoke so quietly that I couldn't hear that.
       그는 너무 조용히 말했어서 나는 그의 말을 들을 수가 없었다.
  
  
• So+형/부+as+to 부정사: ~할 정도로 너무 ~하다
  ex) He was so kind as to help my homework.
       그는 내 숙제를 도와줄 정도로 너무 친절했다.
  
  

긍/부정에서의 so  

• (부정문에서):그렇게, 그 정도로
  ex) The work isn't so easy as you think
       일은 그렇게 쉽지 않다. 네 생각만큼.
  번외) Not so much A as B
        He isn't so much a scholar as a explorer.
        그는 학자라기 보단 탐험가다.
  
  
• (긍정문에서) so <->(부정문에서) not
  (이미 언급된 내용을 다시 반복할 때)
  
  ex) Will he pass the exam?
      -We hope so  [긍정]
      -We hope not [부정]
  
  ex) He asked me to call me, and I did so.
       그는 나에게 전화해달라고 요청해서, 그래서 나는 그렇게 했다.
  
  

'그렇다' so [대답 용법]

• So+v+s:~도 역시 그렇다
  (나에 관한 얘기로 동의할 때)
  ex) A:He likes swimming. B:so do I
       -일반동사를 받을 때: So do I
       -Be동사를 받을때:   So am I
  
  
• 정말 그렇다. 
  (상대방의 말에 동의할 때)
  ex) A:He likes swimming. B:So he does.
       A:그는 수영을 좋아한다. B:정말 그렇다.

관용어구들(외우세요ㅜㅜ)

• And so forth~(=and so on: etc) :~(등)등
  ex) We are just talking about cultures, values, and so forth.
       우리는 단지 얘기 중이에요. 문화, 가치관, 그리고 기타 등등.
• Not so much A as B: A라기보다 오히려 B인
  =Not A so much B/ B rather than A/ more B than A
  ex) Sara is not so much a gardner as a florist.(Not so much A as B)
     =Sara is not a gardner so much as a florist.(not A so much B)
     =Sara is florist rather than a gardner.(A와 B 위치 바뀜) ( B rather than A)
     =Sara is more a florist than a garner.(More B than A)
• Not so much as V(동사): V 조차도 않다(even)
  ex) The mentally retanded man can't so much as white his own name.
       그 정신지체 남자는 자신의 이름조차 쓰지 못한다.
         cf) without so much as V: V조차 하지 않고
             so as (in order ) to V: V 하기 위해, V 하도록 <목적>
• 숫자 or so:~정도,~쯤,~가량(about)
  수량 기간의 수사 뒤에서 쓰임
  ex) It is ten miles or so from the city hall to the airport.
       시청에서 공항까지 10마일쯤 됩니다
• so much for:~(의 일)은 그만, 이만, 이것으로 끝
  ex) so much for today
     =Let's call it a day
     =Let's stop here today
     =That's enough for today
